The first edition of The Nobile Folios explores The Bathers by the major British painter Mark Gertler (1891 – 1939). The painting is set alongside Shaun Levin’s original short story Trees at a Sanatorium.

Mark Gertler was born in London in 1896, and killed himself in London in 1939. He studied at the Slade School of Art, where he met and fell in love with the painter, Dora Carrington. Some months before the First World War he met Lady Ottoline Morrell, who invited him to her home, Garsington Manor in Oxfordshire, which he visited often. He contracted tuberculosis in 1920 and spent stretches of time, between two and six months, at the sanatorium in Banchory, and at Mundesley, near Cromer.
